Dorothy Riley (Dempsey)
Dorothy grew up in New York and joined the Coast Guard. She was “officially” a Master of Arms at their base in Boston, but unofficially worked for a touring Coast Guard theater group. The interview was done in 2006.
(Betty) Jane Ashcraft (Fisher)
Jane grew up the daughter of farmers in a small town in Nebraska. She enlisted in the SPARs in 1945 and was in boot camp as the war ended. She ended up serving in Washington state as a yeoman. The interview was done in 2006 and 2007. Jane died in 2009.
Monica Schulte (Kastens)
Monica spent her childhood on a farm near the small town of Orient, South Dakota. Both of her sisters had enlisted in the WAVES, but Monica decided to be different and became a SPAR. She was a yeoman based at the 8th District offices in New Orleans. After the war, she enlisted in the Navy’s Women’s Reserve and ended up serving in the Korean War. The interview was done in 2007.
Virginia “Vickie” Burdick (Leach)
Vickie was from the Oregon coast, and she enlisted in the SPARs in 1943. She became a yeoman and was stationed in Seattle. After World War II, she enlisted in the Navy’s Women’s Reserve and served in the Korean War. The interview was done in 2007. Vickie died in 2008.
